As I was growing up, Lent was just a time when I was supposed to give up something. Give up chocolate, give up ice cream, give up watching TV past 9 pm.

As I grew older, though, I began doing something rather than giving something up. I have began to recognize that though Lent is about sacrifice, it is also about reflection and strengthening your faith. Rather than giving something up for Lent, try doing better. If you struggle with forgiveness, work on forgiving others, forgiving yourself, and attending Confession. If you struggle with patience, practice breathing before reaction and meditation.

During this Lenten season, try to work on bettering yourself and through that, strengthening your relationship with Christ.
